To spread a little levity to this situation we have included the clip from “The Middle”, which is an ABC sitcom show that appears on Wednesday nights at 8 PM EST. Throughout this season we have watched Sue Heck, a senior in high school apply and receive her admission letters. The clip shows the family’s anticipation as they open the financial aid award letter.
Although the show made me laugh, the affordability of college is no laughing matter. The Heck family was able to afford Sue’s college choice because of the amount of financial need they received from her college. I cannot stress enough how important it is for families to understand the financial aid award letters. Know the difference between the merit and need based scholarship and whether the loan is a subsidized or unsubsidized. Go back to the college if you have any questions. Most importantly, look at this award and understand the projected debt at the end of the four-years of education. This initial decision is one that will affect the student and the family for the rest of the life.
